This little-known trick helps you get rid of followers you don't want, without the drama of blocking.

Want to get rid of a follower on Instagram, but don't want to out-and-out block them? Blocking on social media has long been a source of anxiety for users, due to the fact that the person you've blocked can see what you've done. Thankfully, there's an easy way to remove someone from your Instagram followers without having to hit that block button - an easy way to escape any awkwardness from submitting an embarrassing "Ask Me Anything" question back when you thought they were anonymous.

For quite some time, Instagram users who have private accounts have been able to remover followers with ease. Now, Instagram are testing the function on public accounts too; soon, everyone will be able to prune their following with ease and discretion.

Here's how to remove Instagram followers without blocking them

1. Depending on whether the function is being tested on your public account right now, you may need to lock your account (don't worry you can unlock it as soon as you're taking people off your followers list).

2. Tap your followers counter at the top of your profile.

3. On your followers list, you'll see each person have three dots to the right of their profile pic and username. Tap this and select "remove."

The roll-out of this function to public profiles is the latest in a string of new features aimed at helping people make the most of their time on Instagram. In May, a new "mute" function was rolled out, followed by a "You're All Caught Up" notification in early July.
