Stefan Karl Stefansson took to Instagram to thank his well-wishers, following news that his cancer had reached stage four.

Lazy Town's Stefan Karl Stefansson, A.K.A Robbie Rotten, has taken to Instagram to thank fans for their support; after his wife revealed in a Facebook post that the actor's cancer had left him with little time left.

Stefan shot to internet icon status in 2016; after his "Lazy Town" alter-ego Robbie Rotten became a much-loved meme and source of shitposting inspiration, when Lazy Town's song "We Are Number One" was remixed several times by various YouTubers. Fans have since followed his fight against bile-duct cancer, raising thousands of pounds to support him through treatment via a GoFundMe page; as well as using YouTube videos to raise awareness of his story.

But the Robbie Rotten actor's condition worsened.

Last week, Stefan's wife Steinunn Olina Thorsteinsdottir revealed in an emotional Facebook post that his cancer had "advanced to stage four"; leaving the 41-year-old actor, musician and comedian out of conventional treatment options and facing a"significantly reduced" life expectancy.

At stage four, cancer has spread from its original site to other parts of the body; making treatment more complex. At this point cancer is usually incurable.

Following the news, Stefan shared an uplifting meme on Instagram.

The image reads: "At the end of every storm there is a rainbow of hope." He captioned the post with a message to those who have supported him during his illness: "From the bottom of my heart I thank you for the support you provide me. You give me hope and you all move me."

From the bottom of my heart I thank you for the support you provide me. You give me hope and you all move me.
