And for a very dark reason

The hyper-popular social network Tumblr is currently not being listed on the Apple App Store, after the tech giant discovered that Tumblr had failed to filter out sexual images of children on it's mobile app.

Tumblr vanished completely from the App Store on November 16th 2018 and is yet to return. Tumblr was initially extremely vague about the sudden disappearance, but when pressed by Download.com, Tumblr admitted that the app had been removed by Apple after child pornography was discovered on the platform.

After this revelation, the company put out a new press statement, blaming an internal automatic auditing system, which failed to find the images and filter them out.

Tumblr revealed that every image uploaded to their platform is “scanned against an industry database of child sexual abuse material” to filter out offending materials. Apple demands that all apps have such capabilities.

Tumblr says they discovered that there were gaps in this database, which in turn allowed certain images to get through the filter and onto their app.

According to The Verge, the company considers getting the app back on the store its “top priority". However, they have not been able to say when the app will return.

So if you haven't already downloaded Tumblr onto your Apple device, you'll have to wait a while longer to do so.
