A Fake Vine 2 Is Tricking People On The App Store
11 October 2018, 17:25
The app looks an awful lot like the much hyped V2 - the official follow up to Vine - but don't be fooled
An app calling itself 'V2' has hit the app store, but don't be fooled, it is not actually the much hyped follow-up to Vine that was teased by Vine creator Dom Hofman (dubbed 'V2') but instead a very close imitator.
Hofman previously announced that he was resurrecting the beloved video app in a new form, but sadly then delayed the project 'indefinitely'.
This new Vine-style app markets itself under the name 'V2', but does not seem to have any official link to the real V2 or the original Vine. Instead, it is made by something called 'VidWorld Labs AB'.
A statement on the actual, official V2 website reads:
"The app currently in the App Store was not made by us and is an impersonation. Please be cautious if you decide to use it."
They are also keen to emphasise that outside of their site and Twitter account:
"There is NO official Instagram account. There is NO official merchandise. There is NO official chat. There are NO other official sites, Twitter accounts, beta offers, or apps."
Some fans are not convinced - and the app sits at a 2.8 out of 5 rating on the Apple app store.
Curiously, we received a formal-looking press release which stated: "We are happy to announce that the V2 app has officially launched and is now available on AppStore and Google Play." The word 'officially' appears to be used quite dubiously.
We have reached out to their press office to try and clarify the situation and will update this article if they reply.
