Originals for all!
YouTube has a paywall. A large paywall. The kind of paywall a dickhead may refer to as "a big beautiful wall". And YouTube wants to tear that wall down. Ya hear that Gorbachev??? Tear down that wall, dammit!
The paywall currently guards a selection of mediocre treasures like a kind of budget Smaug. These are YouTube's original programmes, creatively titled 'YouTube Originals', which include such shows as the Joey Graceffa-fronted 'Escape The Night' and the Logan Paul project 'The Thinning'.
Starting in 2019 (no concrete date yet) these Originals will be made available to all YouTube users, with profit coming from ads within the videos as opposed to through subscription payments. This is very similar to the system YouTube recently rolled out with over 100 Hollywood movies on it's movie service.
The real question is how this will affect YouTube Premium, YouTube's subscription service which was rolled out only months ago. Access to Originals was one of the main selling points of a Premium membership, as well as the ability to download YouTube videos to watch offline.
Could this new move indicate that the Premium gamble has not paid off? I don't actually know the answer, but you better believe I'm gonna throw some rhetorical questions out there about it. Has it failed? Could the world we know be on the cusp of destruction??
We'll let you know as soon as we have a solid date for the great paywall destruction.
