Is Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul’s relationship real or fake? An investigation
25 June 2019, 17:29
A Very Serious Investigation.
Despite both originally stating their relationship was just for “the clout”, things seem to have progressed pretty fast between the couple and now we’re just not sure what’s going on anymore. Are they really engaged? Has any part of their relationship been real or is the whole thing just staged for the clicks?
Being a team of Very Serious Journalists, we’ve decided to do some extremely important work and investigate the matter further. Here is all the evidence we have so far…
Exhibit A - Jake may have been in a ‘fake relationship’ before...
Jake previously dated YouTuber Erika Costell but it seems the relationship may not have actually been real. In an interview with the New York Times in 2017, Jake confessed about his relationship with Erika: "We’re not even actually dating. It’s like the WWE. People know that’s fake, and it’s one of the biggest things of entertainment."
They even had a fake wedding, vlogging the whole ceremony from the altar. Is it possible that his relationship with Tana is fake as well?
Verdict: Quite possibly this is evidence Jana is completely fake. Neither Jake nor Tana seem like they would be against having a ‘relationship’ just for the extra clicks and clout we reckon, based on some of their previous antics.
Exhibit B - ...But then that relationship might have become ‘real’ anyway
Despite Jake’s ‘fake relationship’ origins with Erika, it seems the pair might actually have started dating for real at a later date anyway. In his tweet explaining that he and Erika had broken up, things seemed pretty heartfelt, with Jake referring to Erika as his girlfriend, saying she is a “beautiful soul” who changed his life. Then later, in Shane Dawson’s docu-series about Jake Paul, the then-couple explained how their “fake relationship” later became real.
Verdict: Could this mean Jake and Tana started dating as a joke and later realised it was True Love™? It’s a definite possibility.
Exhibit C - Tana referring to Jake as her “rebound”
When the couple first got together, Tana had just broken up with her ex Brad Sousa and referred to Jake as her “rebound” and in their first video together it they refer to themselves as having a "clout relationship" and call the video a "clout-lab".
Verdict: At this point, the relationship is definitely fake.
Exhibit D - Jana wearing matching outfits
In early May, the couple headed to a party in matching outfits and engaged in some pretty convincing looking PDA. Tana wrote on Instagram at the time: “is it even real if u don’t show up to the party matching”.
Verdict: Potentially… real? Help us, we’re confused.
Exhibit E - Doing a couple’s photoshoot and taking some family snaps
Verdict: This is cute but also has the definitive air of being A Joke.
Exhibit F - “Janacon”
Tana and Jake have been teasing “janacon” for a while now across Insta and in their videos, but that’s something else we can’t be sure if they’re serious about. Intended to, assumedly, be a joint (and hopefully better managed) version of Tana’s disastrous ‘Tanacon’ event last year.
Verdict: Real. No-one would blend their names with someone else’s and stage a whole convention around it unless they were really together… OR WOULD THEY?
Exhibit G - Tana’s wild comments on Jake’s Instagram
See below for a selection of Tana’s recent comments on Jake Paul’s Insta. Are these the kind of comments to come from a “fake girlfriend”? 🤔
Verdict: Who knows! We’re just as confused as you are and we can no longer tell.
Exhibit H - The Car
The car Jake bought Tana for her birthday is a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon which costs upwards of around $125,000.
Verdict: Perhaps for us mere penniless mortals, this might be a gesture of romance, but considering Jake Paul is a multi-millionaire, him buying this car for Tana in comparison to his income is basically like the love of my life buying me, like, a bus ticket as a gift. This one could be all show and no romance.
Exhibit I - The ring and wedding cake
Then again, would you actually ambush your fake girlfriend’s 21st birthday with a ‘WILL YOU MARRY ME’ cake and an actual engagement ring if the relationship wasn’t, you know, real?
Verdict: If we’re talking about Jake Paul… quite possibly!
