Tanya is playing the lead role in "Confidence" this summer.

As Tanya Burr prepares to tread the boards in her first professional stage show, "Confidence", the YouTuber turned actress has spoken out against critics who say she's only landing roles because of her influencer background.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Tanya said accusations of stunt-casting - the practice of casting someone famous to increase ticket sales - have been "frustrating" for her. "It was just annoying that people thought that I'd been cast because of what I do on the internet," she said.

While Tanya has come to the role with no professional acting experience, the play's director Rob Drummer has praised her "intelligence" and "real instinct for character."

Despite the critics, Tanya is focussing on making the role a success. She told Newsbeat, "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous but I try to put the nerves at the back of my mind and just say I'm excited."

What's Tanya's play all about?

Confidence follows 90s teen Ella (played by Tanya) through her life of "mix tapes, Argos catalogues and crop tops" as she "tries to escape her mundane life on the seafront to have a successful life in Los Angeles"

"Confidence" opens at the Southwark playhouse, London, on May 23rd.
